Just outside of Hilo there are two nice waterfalls at the roadside. While at the first one, Rainbow Falls, you already have a good view from the lookout, the second fall, Pe'epe'e Falls, is better seen from the bottom. There is a small trail going down to the river at the right of the viewing area. Once down you can continue as far as you want...
